Community Shop Celebrates Social Enterprise UK Award Shortlisting

Community Shop, the UKs first social supermarket chain, has been shortlisted in the ‘Prove It: Social Impact’ category at the Social Enterprise UK awards, following the launch of its Impact Report in March.

The social enterprise, Community Shop, was founded in 2013 by the UK’s largest redistributor of surplus, Company Shop. Now with four stores across the country, Community Shop offers high quality surplus food from the manufacturing supply chain to its members, at heavily discounted prices. It is all perfectly edible food which would otherwise have gone to waste. Instead, it is used to create vast social, economic and environmental benefits, within both the food industry and throughout the communities it serves.

Community Shop’s Impact Report demonstrates how the organisation continues to put its shared vision and aims into practice, to make a transformational difference to people’s lives. Since Community Shop launched, 93% of members reported feeling that their mental wellbeing has improved all or some of the time since joining, and 98% reported that they feel they have access to the tools and skills they need to achieve their life goals. Much of this is as a result of the wide ranging support provided by Community Shop, with everything from debt advice, employability skills, cook club and home budgeting sessions. Community Shop supports its members to get their lives back on track, building stronger individuals and more confident communities.

The report launch was held at the House of Lords in March 2017 and attracted Dr Christina Holweg, the leading academic in this field, as well as our top target partners and stakeholders from across the food industry.

The winner of the Prove It: Social Impact award will be announced on Thursday 23rd November at the awards ceremony, which is taking place at the Royal Horticultural Halls.

John Marren, Chairman and Founder of Company Shop and Community Shop, said:

We are delighted that Community Shop has been nationally recognised for its efforts to create stronger individuals and more confident communities, with yet another award shortlisting this year.

“The Community Shop model has social impact at its very heart, and the results and outcomes achieved so far have been a result of this. We are honoured to be shortlisted for this Social Enterprise UK award.”
