What is surplus?

Surplus can come from many places: overproduction, packaging changes, discontinued lines, range resets, trials, seasonal products, missed deliveries, downgraded products and more.

Every year, thousands of perfectly good products are classed as surplus long before they reach a supermarket shelf. These are products that are perfectly safe to eat, but don’t meet the exact quality standards required to be sold in mainstream supermarkets. This doesn’t affect food safety - it simply means the product is different, not faulty, and is therefore redirected to us.

When buying surplus, products may sometimes look or taste a little different, but this is exactly why the price is lower and why we’re able to rescue so much great food from going to waste.

We have two types of memberships available: Company Shop is a network of 13 UK membership-based stores powered by surplus. Members can enjoy savings of up to 50% on big brands they love! Community Shop is a not-for-profit social supermarket powered by surplus donations. With 15 UK membership-based stores, Community Shop provides access to deeply discounted food and personal development programmes for communities in need.

Surplus explained

Surplus is the unexpected, the extra and the “not quite supermarket perfect” — but still perfectly good. We rescue these products and bring them straight to our members at a fraction of the price.

Food production is complex. Small changes in heat, cooking time, batch size, ingredients or equipment can affect consistency, texture and appearance.
Examples:
- soup that’s thinner or runnier than usual
- beans that are slightly softer, firmer, or occasionally a little “overcooked”
- sauces that might be thicker or more reduced in flavour
- products that look or behave slightly differently to standard supermarket versions
This could be anything from canned goods with dented cans to cereal boxes with slightly damaged boxes or it may simply come in plain and unbranded packaging. The product itself is perfectly fine, but the packaging may not be perfect or look slightly different to normal.
Manufacturers often produce small batches of new products to test the market or to sell during certain seasons. These products can be hard to find in traditional supermarkets, but you’ll find them at Company Shop.
Sometimes, manufacturers produce more of a product than they need. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as changes in consumer demand or unexpected production delays. Company Shop works with manufacturers to purchase excess stocks at a discount, so you can save money on the products you love.
Sometimes, deliveries to supermarkets don’t go according to plan. For example, a delivery may be missed due to bad weather, or it may be delayed due to a mechanical issue. Company Shop works with supermarkets to purchase these products at a discount, so you can save money on high-quality groceries.
